A Special Day of Tea Ceremony and Smiles Across Generations.

Hello everyone from Hakata Maiko Chaya “Wanoka-no-Omote”!

Our venue is located in Hakata’s historic Kawabata Shopping Arcade, a vibrant street with over a century of history where the true merchant spirit of Hakata still lives on. Recently, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming a wonderful, close-knit family all the way from the USA!

During their visit, they took part in our authentic “Tea Ceremony Experience,” which embodies the very essence of Japanese aesthetics. From the moment they stepped into our modern yet traditional space adorned with a gently glowing full moon, everyone—from the children to the adults—had their eyes lit up with excitement.

Sitting up close, they watched our lovely Hakata Maiko prepare the tea with graceful, refined movements. The soothing, rhythmic sound of the whisk against the bowl, followed by the rich, comforting aroma of premium matcha filling the air—every sensory detail of this traditional culture captured their hearts. It was truly heartwarming for our team to see the whole family watching the demonstration with such curious and warm eyes.

After watching the performance, it was time for the family to try making their own bowls of tea. Guided gently by the Maiko, the children worked hard with their small hands, and the adults focused intently while having a wonderful time whisking the tea. When they took their first sip of the matcha they had brewed themselves, they all shared giant smiles and exclaimed how delicious it was!

Being able to help a family create such a special travel memory while connecting across generations and borders through Hakata’s traditional performing arts was a truly moving experience for our entire staff. This beautiful connection is the very essence of the “Omotenashi” (hospitality) we strive to deliver.

At Wanoka-no-Omote, we function as an authentic Japanese cafe during the day where you can enjoy premium matcha and treats. We also offer unique plans to enjoy the charms of the historic Hakata district throughout the day, including our special “Asanabe” (morning hot pot) dining experience. With our dedicated English-speaking staff always available, international guests can dive deep into the history and etiquette of Japanese culture without any language barriers.

We love sharing these heartwarming encounters and glimpses of our vibrant daily activities on our official Instagram (@hakata_maiko). Please follow us to stay connected and be a part of our global community!

If you have friends or loved ones planning a trip to Hakata, we would highly appreciate your recommendation. To our wonderful guest family from the USA, thank you so much, and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon!
